Gifted Services in Brandywine School District

The Brandywine School District is committed to providing quality programming and opportunities for students identified as gifted and/or talented, and for students whose rate and level of learning is above the average.  Brandywine offers the only full-time Gifted program in the state for students in grades K-8.  Students who meet the criteria for eligibility will be invited to attend the full-time gifted program for the following school year.

Gifted Program includes elementary through middle grades

The Gifted Program is located by grade level at the following schools:

Grades K, 1, 2, 3Mount Pleasant Elementary School
Grades 4, 5Claymont Elementary School
Grades 6, 7, 8P.S. duPont Middle School

The Gifted Program is provided for students in grades K-8.  Students attend schools based upon grade level configurations, as noted above.  Specific supports are in place to ensure smooth transitions between schools within the structure of the Gifted Program.  Transportation is provided throughout the Brandywine School District for Gifted Program students to the appropriate school.

Students may qualify for entry into the Gifted Program at any grade level.  Teachers and counselors provide support to ease transitions for students and families new to the Gifted Program.   Students typically remain in the Gifted Program from year to year, provided they are meeting with success.

Statement on Gifted Program
At its May 15, 2003 meeting, the Board approved a statement about the gifted program.  Written by the Gifted Task Force, the statement is as follows:

Brandywine School District recognizes the rights of all students to an education that provides for maximum development of their potential.
Children and youth with outstanding gifts and talents perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.  They require programming and support services which offer opportunities for acceleration and enrichment beyond those usually offered.
Outstanding gifts and talents are present in children and youth from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
