P.S. duPont Middle School
Building and Campus
P.S. duPont Middle School is proud to boast one of the most historic, yet ultra modern, educational facilities in the state. Built in 1935 by the City of Wilmington with a generous gift from Mr. Pierre Samuel duPont, P.S. was hailed as the greatest educational facility in the nation. The entire campus underwent a $44 million renovation project that took nearly two years to complete. As it did in 1935, P.S. once again has become the subject of newspaper and magazine articles across the country and the world.
The three-story structure has been designed to accommodate up to 950 students. Designing architects masterfully preserved the historic charm and character of the school while complimenting it with all the modern amenities of a new building. A few of the building's features include:
- 1200 seat auditorium with a “fly away curtain” stage, new lighting and sound
system
- newly constructed Technology Education Center
- cafeteria with restaurant style seating and new food prep and kitchen
areas
- two gymnasiums
- art display gallery
- restored historic library with all original oak casework
- three full computer labs
- a variety of instructional technology to enhance learning (LCD projectors,
document cameras, interactive SMART boards, etc.)
- renovated competition size pool
- football/soccer stadium with a new rubberized track
- enclosed courtyard destined to become “P.S. Gardens”
- newly constructed Family Consumer Science Center
As impressive as these highly lighted features are, they pale in comparison to the historic architectural design that continues to honor its long held reputation as the most majestic and impressive school in the state.
